As we all wait for Game of Thrones to make a comeback for its seventh season, HBO has us hype for a whole new reason. The network is optioning Nnedi Okorafor’s sci-fi novel, Who Fears Death.

The award-winning novel tells the tale of the dominant light-skinned tribe of Nuru and the oppressed dark-skinned Okeke taking place in the post-apocalyptic future version of Sudan. The story follows protagonist Onyesonwu (Igbo for “who fears death”), is born from an Okeke woman who was raped by a Nuru sorcerer. Onyesonwu goes on a quest to defeat her father using her own powers.

Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin will executive produce, but Okorafor reassured that she is “very involved.”

“I also know George well (we met in 2014 and stayed in touch,” the author reassured in a Facebook comment. “He’s been sort of a mentor to me through all this … and all those involved know what this story is; Onyesonwu is in good hands.”

While being in development is the first step in a process that may or may not lead to an actual TV series, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing where this journey takes Okorafor and the story of Onyesonwu.
