Watch out world, “Grown-ish” just got greenlit for a second season!

The big reveal was announced at the inaugural Freeform Summit on Thursday. The second season will have 20 more episodes to follow up after season one’s initial 13 episodes.

While it’s exciting news, this definitely doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been keeping up with the show’s success. Grown-ish‘s first episode was Freeform’s biggest series launch in two years and also the best comedy debut since 2012. It also generated 4.5 million views across linear and digital platforms, which is the best digital debut in Freeform history. Its premiere was also a social win with 214,000 engagements across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr.

The series definitely isn’t shying away from the tough topics, tackling everything from drug use to biphobia. However, when it comes to the rest of the Johnson family making an appearance on the show, they might have a little bit of an issue.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, at the Time’s Up meeting prior to the Golden Globes, Tracee Ellis Ross discussed getting paid significantly less than her Black-ish co-star Anthony Anderson. Sources have also reported that with negotiations of a fifth season, she feels like if her salary isn’t brought up to par, she might appear in fewer episodes and guest star on another show. A network source said that while a new deal would increase her compensation, they remind THR that Ellis Ross and Anderson don’t have an equal role — Anderson has been attached to Blackish from the start and is an executive producer.

Appearances from Rainbow Johnson are part of the reason why we love Black-ish, so hopefully, these issues get resolved soon. Regardless, we’re excited to see what’s to come for Zoey and the gang on the dope spin-off.
