A week after Rihanna took to Instagram to mourn the death of her cousin, the man accused of killing 21-year-old Tavon Alleyne has been charged with murder.
According to Barbados Today, Shawayne DaShawn Williams appeared in court before Magistrate Douglas Frederick on Wednesday (January 3), though he was not required to plead and is remanded until January 31. Williams reportedly “showed no emotion” as charges were read to him.
Alleyne is said to have been walking near his home at Lakes Close, Eden Lodge, St. Michael on December 26, 2017 before being approached and shot by Williams, who then fled the scene. Alleyne was quickly transported by private vehicle to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he later died.
Rihanna has since taken to social media to call for an end to gun violence. In the last year, Barbados has seen at least 30 murders, including 23 that were gun-related.
“RIP cousin… can’t believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms!” she said on Instagram following her cousin’s death. “Never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!! Love you always man! 😢🙏🏿❤ #endgunviolence”
