President Trump’s latest terrible idea (at press time; it’s pretty hard to keep up) is to remove the United States from the Paris Agreement.
For those of you who share in his confusion and are asking what we agreed to do with Paris and why, here’s a brief explainer: The agreement was negotiated by former President Obama and simply acknowledges recognition that human beings are causing the earth to warm and therefore, we need to be aggressive about slowing the rate at which that happens. The Paris Agreement is called that because it came together in a meeting that took place in Paris. Seriously, that’s the only reason why.
As usual, your president reminds us that he doesn’t know what he’s doing. For starters, as the country signed on to the agreement only a year ago, it can not “withdraw” from it until 2020. Hopefully, he won’t still be sleeping in the White House at that time. Also, EVERY country with the exceptions of Nicaragua and Syria have signed the agreement.
As usual, your president reminds us that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
So, why is Trump tripping? Simply put, he doesn’t believe in global warming, the theme of the agreement, which means he also doesn’t care whether Black people can breathe.
Before we get deeper into our exploration of global warming, please note that 97% of scientists agree that it is a very real thing, so there is no need waste time debating that. People who don’t believe that the earth is warming at an unhealthy rate, are misguided, uninformed or, in what is likely the case for certain politicians, denying the truth for political and/or financial reasons.
Stronger hurricanes, intense heat waves, heavier rains are just some of the effects of global warming. Black people, particularly poor ones, are more likely to be impacted by natural disasters than white people; recall Hurricane Katrina? Also, don’t forget about asthma. Global warming means longer allergy seasons and poor air quality; both are the cause of asthma attacks and studies have found that Blacks are almost three times more likely to die from asthma related causes than whites.
So, if Trump has his way in 2020, this country will not only be seen as a ridiculous outlier from the rest of the word, it’ll also prove once again, that the U.S. doesn’t seem to care if Black people can breathe.
