It doesn’t matter if you’re King of the ‘Land. It doesn’t matter how many championship rings you clinch. No amount of star power shields you from the disgusting hate of racists.

According to TMZ Sports, LeBron James‘ Brentwood, Calif. mansion was targeted in a heinous hate crime on the morning of Wednesday, May 31. Vandals spray painted the “N-” word on the front gate of his property.

The racial slur has since been covered up, but LAPD units investigated the scene, and the perpetrators have not been apprehended. James was not home at the time of the incident, as he’s prepping for the first game of the NBA Finals on the West Coast, against the Golden State Warriors.

Athletes are no strangers to racism on and off the court. Just recently, Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones penned an essay on the racist taunts he faced from bigoted Boston Red Sox fans at Fenway Park. NFL stars constantly share tweets from fantasy football players who believe they own them like cattle, and we all know what people like Donald Sterling feel about the NBA elite.

James has not commented on the hate crime, but he’s used his voice and star power to bring awareness to social justice, especially around the senseless murders of Tamir Rice, Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin.

The battle continues.

UPDATED 7:30 P.M.: James responded to the hate crime during a Finals press conference Wednesday afternoon. He explained that Emmett Till’s mother came to mind when he first heard about the vandalism: “The reason that she had an open casket is that she wanted the world to see what her son went through as far as a hate crime, and being Black in America.”

We are happy he and his family is safe.
