Come for Serena if you want to, John McEnroe, but please believe that won’t stop the G.O.A.T. from shining. If you haven’t seen the August 2017 cover of Vanity Fair yet, behold below, as the mother-and-wife-to-be—in all her melanated glory—graces the front page.

Earlier this week, the bad-ass tennis star was the center of yet another tired ‘is-she/isn’t-she’ the greatest athlete of all time discussion. During a NPR interview, McEnroe stated that Williams—despite her undeniable athletic excellence—would only rank “like No. 700 in the world” if competing in the men’s circuit.

“If I were a man, there would be no question,” she happens to state in the cover story. For real, though: why are we still using gender as a qualifi—you know what?… Nerr’mind.

Anyway. On Monday, the queen took to Twitter to essentially tell McEnroe to keep her name out his mouth. “Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based,” she wrote. “I’ve never played anyone ranked ‘there’ nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I’m trying to have a baby. Good day sir.”

McEnroe appeared on CBS This Morning on Tuesday to address the situation. When given the opportunity to apologize, he told Norah O’Donnell: “No.” But then he also stated his comment “wasn’t necessary” and that he “didn’t know it would create controversy.” Sooo why couldn’t he say sorry? Again, we won’t say anything, because we’re Qwhite sure the reason speaks for itself.

On a lighter note, Williams looks extremely happy with her fiancé in the Vanity Fair shoot. As the piece reads, “This is a love story,” and we’re all for it.
