BuzzFeed is no longer home to one of our favorite culture podcasts.
Tracy Clayton and Heben Nigatu, hosts of the successful podcast “Another Round,” released a statement Wednesday morning on the show’s Twitter account saying the show is “parting ways with BuzzFeed.” The benefit is that the duo was offered ownership of the show, which they have accepted.
“The whole thing started as an experiment in a ‘studio’ made of pillows and blankets swiped from around the office and it grew into a space of acceptance and self-care for those who need it, a place to duck into and laugh when the world is too much, and a stage where the overlooked and silenced can see themselves and their stories reflected at long last,” read the statement.
The P.S. was undoubtedly the best part, alluding to the fact that they were now in ownership of the podcast.
They signed off with: “P.S. — LET MORE BLACK WOMEN OWN STUFF, IT CAN ONLY IMPROVE THINGS.”
While this is surely a disappointing loss for BuzzFeed, only good things happen when Black people own things. The now late Combat Jack pioneered the way for Black-owned podcasts and innovated within a medium for people of color to learn, process, and ideate. Unlike newspapers or cable talk shows, podcasts are an accessible space and a 21st-century answer to radio shows. Similarly, “Another Round” holds space for people of color, particularly Black women, in a tumultuous time when their peace and livelihood are under attack at every single moment.
As said on this week’s episode of “Another Round,” the show will be going on a brief hiatus while they figure out what is the next best step for the duo. We’re excited to see what’s to come for Tracy and Heben and wish them the best!
