Just in case you didn’t get this message at home, in health class, or wherever else you may have learned about sex, the CDC is here to reiterate it for you: condoms are a one-time thing, not a reusable asset.
In a recent tweet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they sent out a message saying, “We say it because people do it: Don’t wash or reuse #condoms! Use a fresh one for each #sex act.”
If you need any other supporting evidence as to why this isn’t a good idea (other than the fact that it’s super gross), it won’t be as effective at preventing you from STDs and unwanted pregnancies.
“Condoms prevent the spread of most STDs and likely reduce the risk of all STDs but a condom is only effective when used correctly,” Elizabeth Torrone, an epidemiologist with CDC’s Division of STD Prevention told CNN. “Incorrect use, such as reusing a condom or using more than one at a time, diminishes the protective effect of condoms by leading to condom breakage, slippage, or leakage.”
Another reason? You could be at risk for even MORE infections.
“When I think about washing a condom, it’s warm and wet and there’s no way you’ve scrubbed all of the microorganisms away,” Megan Stubbs, Ed.D. sexologist, told Refinery29. “So a used condom is just a petri dish of bacteria.”
So in short…when in doubt, spring for the extra box, y’all. Don’t be stingy when it comes to play time.
