San Antonio Spurs head coach Popovich doesn’t say much outside of snarky and sarcastic jokes, but when he does, it’s always a gem.
He’s already called President Donald Trump a soulless coward, and now he’s opened up about why charity work is so important to the NBA community. He was asked why he donates money and time to helping those less fortunate. Simply put, it’s because he, like many others, doesn’t need all the money they’ve been afforded.
“Because we’re rich as hell, and we don’t need it all, and other people need it. Then, you’re an ass if you don’t give it. Pretty simple,” Popovich said prior to a 109-97 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
Pop also took the time to remind us that it’s just basketball. It’s been a journey for the Spurs with constant injuries, namely star player Kawhi Leonard, but the team is finally on the up and up. Pop is glad his team is healthy, but he’s aware that there are much bigger problems going on in the world.
“It’s basketball. It’s not the Middle East peace process. It’s not figuring out why our democracy is being eroded. It’s pick and roll. Big deal,” he said when asked about the status of his team.
This isn’t the first time the 68-year-old coach has spoken out about movements he agrees with as he also supported the Women’s March in light of gender inequality and constantly denounces President Trump and his dismal approval ratings.
Before deciding to focus his career on coaching, Popovich was mulling over a career in intelligence after serving five years in the Air Force and majoring in Soviet Studies while attending the Air Force Academy.
