Darrelle Revis, one of the best cornerbacks to ever set foot into the NFL, has announced his retirement.
The 33-year-old took to social media to announce his decision to step away from the game after playing professionally for 11 years.
He reminisced about how he dreamed of playing in the NFL one day, and how lucky he was to see his dream fully come to fruition. As one of the most dominating cornerbacks in the league, he brought new life to the position and was even nicknamed “Revis Island” for his defensive prowess.
“My passion to play the game at an elite level brought fun and excitement to the term ‘shutdown corner,’ which was nearly on the verge of extinction. Covering some of the toughest assignments in league history was a challenge every Sunday, but also an honor within this game we all love,” he wrote.
After being drafted by the Jets in 2007, he quickly became the league’s preeminent lockdown corner, which earned him a Pro Bowl invite in 2009. After six seasons and an ACL tear, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he played for a year before joining the New England Patriots, which eventually yielded his Super Bowl XLIX ring. Revis most recently played for the Kansas City Chiefs, but only appeared in five games.
