Just one week after announcing the release date for Negro Swan, Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange returns with “Jewelry” from his forthcoming album, due August 24. “Jewelry” was directed by Hynes and stars author, activist and Pose director Janet Mock, who also penned and recorded interludes for the album.

“A DEEP honor to write/speak words for interludes of #BloodOrange’s new album #NegroSwan, and to open Dev Hynes’ newest video,” she tweeted on Thursday (July 26). The video accompanies visuals for “Charcoal Baby,” which was directed by Crack Stevens and will also appear on the album.

As previously reported, Negro Swan will explore Black depression and the anxieties of queer people of color, according to Hynes.

“My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of colour,” he said in a recent press release. “A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all. The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness.”

Negro Swan is slated for August 24 release, with Hynes touring in support of the album this fall. Watch the new videos for “Jewelry” and “Charcoal Baby” below, and keep an eye out for additional appearances from Kai the Black Angel and others.
