National Donut Day

Would you try a bacon donut? Today, it’s not so crazy to come across one. There are few reasons to eat whatever the hell you want and #NationalDonutDay (NDD) is one of them. According to National Day Calendar, NDD was created in 1938 to honor the Salvation Army Lassies, women who volunteered to serve donuts to the troops during WWI—let’s not unpack the obvious right now. The special day always falls on the first Friday of June and is the only 24 hours you get a pass to walk around with a dozen donuts just for yourself.

While glaze, powdered and chocolate donuts are always delicious choices but makes you worry about derailing your diet, NDD is a time when you shouldn’t worry about that six-pack. “It’s only once a year,” says Melissa Miller, a manager at Dough, a handmade artisanal doughnut bakery in New York City that offers tasty mashups, such as Gin & Tonic and Lemon-Ginger. “I like everything about the day because it really showcases the craft and the dedication we put into everything. You can always get the regulars. Today is a day to give something new a try. You won’t regret it.”
