The Alvarez family is making its way back to Netflix for the second season of One Day at a Time.

After a heavy but heart-warming end to the first season, the family will tackle new issues that are all too relevant in 2018. In the trailer, we see that nurse, veteran, and single mom Penelope is going back to school and struggling to juggle all of her roles, plus a new boyfriend. Youngest kid Alex gets into a fight after being called “beaner” and “wetback” at his Catholic middle school, an apparent nod to the anti-Latinx sentiment that the Trump administration has ushered in. Daughter Elena and abuelita Lydia are still going back and forth about navigating being Cuban-American and Elena’s newly revealed queerness. We also get a sneak peek of a new potential love interest for Elena. And then we have the hipster landlord Schnieder, who is still, well, white and well-meaning.

We can’t wait to laugh along with our favorite Cuban-American television family for a second 13-episode season. The reboot of the 1970s sitcom’s second season will be available on January 26. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below.
