Rapper and songwriter Princess Nokia is well-known for her music, but also her aesthetic — her affinity for street style and nerd culture bleeds through her social media platforms but also her lyrics. That’s why her latest collaboration with Foot Locker and ASICS on their “Welcome to the Dojo” pack is a match made in heaven.

The two brands are all about celebrating culture, individuality and collaboration in their latest campaign, drawing inspiration from the rich history of cultural exchange between the East and the West. Foot Locker Inc. and ASICS have combined their influences to exclusively launch the ASICS “Welcome to the DOJO” pack through “The Sun and the Snake,” a bespoke anime-inspired series featuring Luka Sabbat, Princess Nokia and YFN Lucci.

In the anime series, Princess Nokia voices Kiku, who is an aid to main character Sneaker Samurai, voiced by Sabbat.

“My character Kiku is a sweet, funny, smart sarcastic 12-year-old girl that is helping sneaker samurai on his journey to discovering Welcome to the Dojo and the ASICS sneakers,” she told CASSIUS.

With a campaign that is so in touch with cultural fusion, it’s only natural that you have three culture leaders like Luka Sabbat, Princess Nokia and YFN Lucci at the forefront of the campaign. The native Nuyorican cites this as one of the reasons why it’s such an exciting collaboration.

“I think we all have strengths and young artists of color are so multifaceted so it only makes sense that we can act, rap, sing, model,” she said. “It’s a beautiful renaissance that reflects this whole new generation.”

As a fan of anime herself, she cites Michiko to Hatchin as her favorite anime, gathering strength and inspiration from the title characters Michikio Marandoro, who she says is a “resilient badass,” and Hannah “Hatchin” Morenos, who gets rescued by Michiko and develops her courage along the way. When asked about whether or not she felt insecure about owning her identity as a Puerto Rican nerd from East Harlem whose bomba y plena game is as fire as her anime knowledge, she confidently explains that was never an issue for her.

“I came from a really nurturing family who was encouraging me to be different …

“I came from a really nurturing family who were encouraging me to be different … they were so passionate about it,” she said. “I was constantly being shown another form of identity that wasn’t stereotypical to the culture. I’ve always had a very special relationship with my culture and the many cultures that are intersected. I’ve always been loud and proud and always happy to be part of ceremony and tradition.”

The ASICS “Welcome to the Dojo” pack, which includes apparel and footwear, will be available exclusively on August 24 from Foot Locker and other retailers, including Footaction and Champs Sports. The first episode of The Sun and the Snake” will premiere on August 21 on Foot Locker’s Youtube and Instagram channels. Check out the trailer down below.
