Simone Manuel won the world 100m freestyle title Friday in Budapest, beating out world record-holder Sarah Sjöström in a record 52.27 seconds, NBC Sports reports.
“I always think I have a shot,” the 20-year-old swimmer told NBC. “It’s kind of been ingrained in me with [having] my two older brothers and just always wanting to keep up with somebody.”
Sjöström was a clear favorite leading into the finals after dominating the 4x100m free relay and shaving .35 off the world record. But it turns out she was no match for Manuel when it came time to perform during the relay, as she cruised past the Swedish swimmer and beat her own personal record by .42 seconds.
