Aworld already so deep in mourning in the wake of the Las Vegas tragedy, has lost another classic artist: Tom Petty.

The singer/songwriter reportedly went into cardiac arrest on Sunday night and was put on life support. After conflicting reports about the status of his condition overtook social media Monday afternoon, Petty died Monday night at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his spokesperson Carla Sacks.

Petty, a native Floridian, was born in 1950. During his iconic music career, he formed the band Mudcrutch before going solo with a backing band called the Heartbreakers. With them, he created signature staples such as “American Girl” and “Free Fallin’.”
