Gabrielle Union Says The Color Purple Saved Her Life After Rape.

On a recent installment of PBS’ Great American Read, Gabrielle Union discusses the book that moved her toward healing after rape.

“I first read The Color Purple when I was 19,” she says in an exclusive clip shared by PEOPLE. “I had been raped and I found myself trying to go from victim to survivor.” She goes on to say that the film gave her “a passageway out,” adding that “watching Seely’s evolution was so transformative.”

“The person that was raped at 19 died that day. And who came up out of the ashes, the rose that bloomed out of concrete, is the smarter, stronger, braver, more resilient person.”

There May Be a New Kneeling Penalty for NFL Players, Because America.

NFL owners met privately on Tuesday to discuss national anthem rules, and according to Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer, one proposal suggested 15-yard penalties for kneeling on the field. Breh.

“The NFL addressed the anthem issue at its meetings in October and March, with plans to further discuss it at this meeting,” SI adds. “The league also met with the Players Coalition in October, and agreed to a seven-year, $89 million social-justice partnership.”

Philip Roth Has Passed Away.

Renowned novelist Philip Roth—who is known for his exploration of Jewish identity and other themes—died of congestive heart failure on Tuesday night. According to The New York Times, the Portnoy’ Complaint author was surrounded by loved ones at his time of death. He was 85 years old.
