Unique is back, and he’s out for blood in Season 4 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan after what he feels is the ultimate betrayal. We spoke with Hip-Hop superstar and actor Joey Bada$$ about his character’s arc this season.
Season 3 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan saw Unique and Raq (Patina Miller) engage in a forbidden romance that almost killed him.
Fans of Raising Kanan lost their sh-t when they thought Unique’s psychotic brother, Ronnie (Grantham Coleman), killed him, only to find out that somehow, some way, Unique lived.
Now, he’s out for revenge, but exacting it won’t be easy as things get complicated quickly for the Queens hustler.

The streets got plenty of bodies in the explosive season finale when Kanan (MeKai Curtis) gunned down Ronnie, robbing Unique of his chance of getting his revenge.
But that still leaves Raq, and Kanan, who Unique feels betrayed him, to take his corners and claim them for her drug operation.
On top of that, Unique is still in bad shape, suffering a traumatic head injury that isn’t allowing him to think straight, and he’s only focusing on getting his life back.
Thankfully, he has some help from Early Tyler (Chris Redd), whom he manages to call with his little bit of strength. Early helps take care of Unique’s dire condition because a dead Unique can’t pay him the money he owes.

Still not 100%, Unique begins his quest for revenge, but his injuries still affect his thinking and how he moves. Ahead of Season 4’s premiere, Joey Bada$$ spoke with CASSIUSLife’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls about Unique’s state of mind, revealing he believes his character might have a severe brain injury.
“I think Unique is scattered brain right now. He suffered a pretty serious brain injury, and even the doctor said he might not be the same person, and I think what he’s really going through is like a CTE. His mind is all over the place,” Bada$$ said.

There is also that whole Raq and Unique situation that we saw pop off in Season 3 after we watched the sexual tension between the two characters finally take off.
Bada$$ explained that he believes Unique’s reaction has to do with him catching feelings for his competition and feeling like she betrayed him to get a leg up on him in the drug dealing business.
I don’t think he’s able to even properly understand what’s up from down right now. It’s just up, everything’s up.”
“I think it’s some personal emotions and feelings in there, as well as some logical business thoughts, like, ‘okay, this makes sense that she would want him out the way so she could advance in her business.’ And maybe it was all part of her plan to take advantage, which could really hurt somebody’s ego or just somebody’s heart, right?” Bada$$ explains. “You were at a certain level with a person, and the whole time, they were scheming against you, but again, he’s clearly not in his right mind. I don’t think he’s able to even properly understand what’s up from down right now. It’s just up, everything’s up.”
We were also shocked to learn this season that Raq and Unique’s encounter led to her getting pregnant, a complicated matter she opts to take on by having an abortion, one because of how it would look bringing in her rival’s child into the world, and she still believes he is dead.
We asked the “Devastated” rapper in his current state how Unique would react to the news that Raq was pregnant with his child and how he would have reacted to finding out about the abortion.
“I’m not sure. Just like Kanye said, ‘I guess we’ll never know.’ I think it would’ve definitely had some type of effect, especially in the middle of all of this,” Bada$$ said. “I think actually that could have been the thing that could have showed Unique, ‘oh nah, she ain’t really had nothing to do with this,’ you know what I’m saying? ‘Okay, maybe she did feel the way that he felt.’ But yes, we’ll never know.”
We can’t wait to see when he eventually learns about the pregnancy. Until then, peep the entire interview above, and keep it locked on CassiusLife for Raising Kanan recaps of the latest episodes.
