BIG3 - Week Eight

Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams hit the Staples Center in L.A. on Sunday, August 13, and quickly turned a night of basketball into a full-on political statement.

The activist was in the building for week 8 of the BIG3 League’s regular season and while there was plenty going down on the court, Jesse’s mind seemed to be with Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman deliberately killed by a white supremacist in Virginia on Saturday. Taking a page out of Colin Kaepernick‘s book, Jesse decided against standing for the National Anthem. Instead, he sat in his seat and recorded the moment for Snapchat, with the caption, “We’ll stand when you do…”

Heyer was intentionally killed when a car drove into a crowd of protesters rallying against injustice in America. In addition to her death, a reported 19 people were injured. White supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. has been charged with second-degree murder. Meanwhile, Donald Trump refuses to denounce racism or the far right groups who are more comfortable than ever under his administration. Cue, Jesse’s National Anthem shade.

Our prayers are with Heather Heyer’s family at this time. May she rest in peace. See Jesse’s reaction here.
