More than 20 years later, America still has an obsession with O.J. Simpson and the murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson. The subject of the Oscar winning documentary, O.J.: Made In America, FX’s Emmy winning limited series The People Vs. O.J. Simpson and countless debates finds yet another resurgence with a new TV special airing next week.
O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession? will air on FOX, after being held for 12 years. FOX held the interview in 2006, after public outcry when it was discovered that Simpson was paid reportedly $3.5 million by the interviewer, Judith Regan, according to Business Insider. Simpson’s “hypothetical account” of Brown Simpson’s and Ron Goldman’s murders were also shared in the bone-chilling book, If I Did It, that Regan also agreed to publish. However, the Goldman family went on to publish the book after HarperCollins declined to publish and ultimately fired Regan, changing the title to, I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.
The new two-hour special is set to air with limited commercials, and comes with permission from the Goldman family. Although Simpson was acquitted of Brown Simpson’s and Goldman’s murders in 1994, he was later convicted and spent almost a decade in prison for a Las Vegas armed robbery. The disgraced football player was granted parole in July 2017, after spending nine years behind bars.
In a promo clip for the special, Simpson says, “Forget everything you think you know about that night because I know the facts better than anyone. This is one story the whole world got wrong.” Will we ever know the real truth behind the gruesome double murder? Each special released seems to give the public another clue for their own theories and water cooler debates.
O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession?, hosted by Soledad O’ Brien will air March 11 on FOX at 8 p.m.
