Before TIME announced Lena Waithe as one of its 100 Most Influential People of 2018, she stopped by the Questlove Supreme podcast to chop it up with the legendary drummer. During her visit, she talked about everything from her Chicago origins to working with Angela Bassett. She also spoke about the criticism of Black art.
“I do think there’s this pressure on Black folks to go support Black stuff whether you love it or not. And I just don’t think we’ve gotten to that place where you can’t go online and be like—even with my show, I don’t know what’s real,” she shares. “Because I don’t know if somebody is going to come out and go, ‘The Chi is just okay.’ Because then folks will be like, ‘Why are you hating on da, da, da?’… My thing is like I welcome it. If you don’t fuck with it, tell me why so I can improve it. I feel like until we can start criticizing each other in public, we ain’t going to ever overcome.”

J. Cole’s Album Cover Is in No Way Meant to Glorify Addiction.
The cover for J. Cole’s KOD is trippy AF. Artist Sixmau recently sat down with VIBE to talk about the inspiration behind the album artwork, which has had social media talking since its reveal.
“I can’t talk much about his vision. You’re going to have to listen to the album,” he said. “It all ties in together. It was definitely a collaboration, a marriage of art and music. He told me what direction he was going in and then he gave me the freedom to portray it how I wanted.”
He added that KOD has “multiple meanings,” but it looks like we’re going to have to wait until tomorrow (April 20) to find out what they are.
Yo! MTV Raps Is Celebrating Its 30th Anniversary in Brooklyn.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Yo! MTV Raps, and to celebrate, Brooklyn’s Barclays Center is playing host to the “YO! MTV Raps 30th Anniversary Experience.” The entire event will be live-streamed by MTV and will feature everyone from Big Daddy Kane and the Juice Crew to KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions. Redman, Method Man, and Eminem are also slated to share tribute videos.
Tickets will go on sale online beginning April 20 at 10 a.m. ET. You can also cop tickets via the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center on Saturday, April 21 at 12 p.m. ET.

Kanye West’s Philosophy Book Is Being Written on Twitter, Because Kanye.
Kanye had everyone tuned in last week when he announced that he’d be writing a book. Titled Break the Simulation, it turns out it’s being developed entirely on Twitter, because who needs publishers breathing down your back?
“This is not a financial opportunity this is an innate need to be expressive,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “I will work on this ‘book’ when I feel it. When we sit still in the mornings we get hit with so many ideas and so many things we want to express. When I read this tweet to myself I didn’t like how much I used the word I so I changed the I’s to we’s.”
