Dr. Umar Johnson has become a staple for outlandish takes and memeable moments.

As a huge proponent of the advancement of Black people, many of his viral videos feature his hot takes on the community.

His latest comes as a debate with Cassius collaborater, host and media personality Mouse Jones, during an episode of the Hustle Over Everything podcast.

The Pan-African psychologist expressed his sadness that hip-hop had become such a mainstream part of global culture but had never really done anything for the Black community.

The clip begins with Mouse saying he doesn’t think Hip-Hop will ever help Black people be respected, but it has helped inspire people and lead to gainful employment.

“It ain’t done sh-t for the community. It made individuals rich, and that’s it,” Dr. Umar says, asserting that just because Hip-Hop gave out jobs, it doesn’t equate to uplifting the community as a whole because a drug dealer could do the same.

Mouse continues with all of Hip-Hop’s rightful contributions, but Dr. Umar is looking for a wholly “relevant institution that Hip-Hop built.”

Dr. Umar persists that bragging that a community or institution created a limited number of jobs isn’t enough. He gives Elon Musk as an example because he likely has some Black folks working at Tesla, but it doesn’t really move the needle.

“You’ve been around for 50 years, the most popular music genre in the world, billions and billions of dollars, and all you can tell me about is a few people can get jobs,” Dr. Umar adds. “That’s bullsh-t when you look at the cost that the black community has had to pay for Hip-Hop. A whole two or three generations of black kids growing up thinking the best thing you can do is be a gangster.”
