Big Facts

Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez, who was acquitted of double murder earlier this week, reportedly hanged himself in his prison cell early Wednesday morning. The 27-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley just after 3:05 a.m., according to CNN. “Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.,” a statement from the correction department says. Today also marks the day that his former teammates are set to be honored at the White House after winning Super Bowl 51.

Big Lies

White nationalist Richard Spencer spoke at Auburn University on Tuesday despite fervent pushback. Needless to say, shit went from 0 to 100—real quick. While students in opposition of Spencer’s appearance gathered for peaceful protest just before the event, peace turned to pandemonium once a “fist fight” broke out and lead to arrests, reports CNN. Later that night, students (and random older folks who probably had no business being there) gathered in Foy Hall to hear Spencer say things like “There would be no history without us” (referring to white people) and “the alt-right is really about putting Humpty Dumpty back together again.” The night ended with a mob of angry students chasing Spencer supporters off campus. Lawd, fix it.

Big News

Representative Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, will not be seeking re-election in 2018, reports The New York Times. “I have long advocated public service should be for a limited time and not a lifetime or full career,” he said in a Facebook statement. “After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time.” Or is it? He also added that he may run for public office in the future, but not in 2018. While Paul Ryan is lauding Chaffetz as “a great defender of liberty and limited government,” Twitter’s having a heydey.

In about-got-damn-time news, The New York Times also reports Fox News kicked Bill O’Reilly to the curb. “After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel,” 21st Century Fox, said in a statement. The decision comes almost three weeks after The New York Times aired out Fox News’ dirty laundry, revealing they and 21st Century Fox had been riding for O’Reilly even as sexual harassment allegations being made against him stacked higher than Cornrow Kenny’s album ratings.
