Madonna’s Aretha Tribute Was Just Wrong. All the Way Wrong.

No disrespect to the Queen of Pop, but WTF was that? While MTV was smart to forgo potentially having someone botch Aretha’s powerhouse runs during this year’s VMAs, their alternative to honoring the late legend has everyone scratching their heads. First of all, WHAT was Madonna wearing? Second of all, why was her speech about everything BUT Aretha? (We can prolly count the number of times Aretha’s name was actually stated on half a hand.) Of course, Twitter went all the way in.

“#Madonna is demonstrating a dynamic performance of peak white womanhood,” @blaqueerflow tweeted. “This was not an #Aretha tribute but a monologue on how another iconic Black woman is being reduced to how she helped a white woman.”

We understand the network wanting to pay respect with someone notable, but MTV, this just wasn’t it. Peep more reactions below:

As The Glow Up notes, “what’s not clear yet is whether the Champion-produced clothing conforms to sustainability and fair labor standards.” But we’re wishing Solána all the best, because, well—she’s Solána.

“In many cases, African-American students have ceased being a majority at HBCUs,” a recent report from Diverse Issues in Higher Education reveals. “At some, they are a small minority among a White majority.”

The report adds that graduate, professional and online programs at HBCUs have a tendency to draw non-Black students at higher rates. Qwhite the interesting tidbit, if we do say so ourselves.
