The AJ41 features new materials and tech for improved breathability, flexibility, and support.

More than four decades after Michael Jordan’s signature sneaker line changed basketball footwear forever, Jordan Brand is ready to start another chapter. On Thursday, August 27, the company officially unveiled the Air Jordan 41, and unlike several recent numbered Jordans, this one isn’t spending much time looking backward. Instead, Jordan Brand says the AJ41 was designed as a more modern, lightweight performance sneaker built around how today’s hoopers actually play. Nike says feedback from Michael Jordan, its professional and collegiate athletes and players in Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League helped shape the shoe.

That approach represents a noticeable change from the Air Jordan 40, which celebrated the signature line’s 40-year history by incorporating elements and DNA from earlier Air Jordans. For the Air Jordan 41, Senior Creative Director Leo Chang and the design team wanted to move forward rather than continue leaning heavily on nostalgia. The result is a sleeker silhouette that trades much of the traditional leather associated with Jordans for thinner textiles and a new NanoPrint mesh upper, helping the shoe become lighter, more breathable and more flexible without sacrificing the support players need when cutting or changing direction.

Underfoot is where Jordan Brand really loaded up the AJ41. The sneaker combines a full-length Zoom Strobel unit with a ZoomX midsole, similar to the foundation introduced with the AJ40, but adds a separate Zoom Air unit in the heel for additional impact protection. According to Jordan Brand, Michael Jordan’s own thoughts on defense and staying ready on your toes influenced that addition. A carbon-fiber and TPU shank provides extra stability through the middle of the sneaker, while a full-length HART rubber herringbone outsole is designed to give hoopers traction for quick stops, cuts and changes of direction.

MJ still has a voice in the process too. Although Jordan Brand obviously isn’t designing its flagship basketball shoe specifically for a 63-year-old Michael Jordan anymore, his feedback remains part of the development process. One interesting example came during the AJ41’s creation: an early prototype reportedly featured an ankle cuff, but Jordan found it difficult to get the shoe on and wasn’t feeling the experience, so designers eventually removed it. Jordan Brand views him less as the athlete it has to build around these days and more as a final test for whether the company is actually pushing his signature line forward.

The design itself also pulls inspiration from two things closely associated with Jordan: supercars and competition. The TPU window exposes some of the sneaker’s internal technology in a way that mimics high-performance cars that proudly show off what is under the hood. Meanwhile, the AJ41’s first group of colorways is based around gemstones instead of classic Jordan color blocking. Announced themes include Ruby, Quartz, Tiger’s Eye, Amethyst, Jade, Meteorite, Pink Diamond and Opal, with each representing a different characteristic such as strength, courage, intuition or creativity. Nike specifically says the Ruby launch colorway calls back to Jordan’s championship three-peats in Chicago, while Amethyst references his birthstone and Opal nods to his University of North Carolina roots.

The gemstone approach is another sign that Jordan Brand wants the 41 to develop an identity of its own instead of simply remixing beloved Jordans from the past. In fact, the initial lineup reportedly won’t feature heritage-inspired colorways based on models like the Jordan 1, 3, 4 or 11. The NanoPrint construction gives designers plenty of room to experiment too, because different colors, graphics and even logos can be worked directly into the upper. That could become especially noticeable with future player exclusives and college PEs.

As for actually getting a pair, the rollout begins August 28 with a limited release in China, with a wider global launch expected to follow. Jordan Brand has not yet announced an official global release date or retail price for the Air Jordan 41, so those details are still to come. What is clear, though, is that the AJ41 is meant to represent more than just another yearly update. With a lighter build, new performance technology and a design language that moves away from heavy nostalgia, Jordan Brand is using its latest flagship sneaker to show where it believes the future of basketball footwear is headed.
