Big Facts

A  manslaughter trial began Wednesday for Betty Shelby, the Oklahoma police officer who fatally shot Terence Crutcher in Tulsa in September. According to ABC News, the Tulsa County District claims Shelby “reacted unreasonably by escalating the situation from a confrontation with Mr. Crutcher, who was not responding to verbal commands and was walking away from her with his hands help up, becoming emotionally involved to the point that she overreacted.” If convicted, Shelby could face from four years to life behind bars, reports Reuters.

Black Twitter struck gold once again, this time with the advent of the #BowWowChallenge, which split. our. sides. The challenge began after Shad shared a photo of a private jet captioned “traveling to NY today” on social media. Oh look! Shad Moss traveling on a private jet! He’s living! But Twitter user @Al_Khee, who happened to be sitting on the same flight as Shad, did his best Ronald Isley “Busted” impression (“You a liiie!”) and laid that flex to rest when he pulled out some receipts. “So this guy lil bow wow is on my flight to NY,” he wrote in what appears to be a Snapchat post. “But on Instagram he posted a picture of a private jet captioned ‘traveling to NY today’ smh.”

So… Betsy DeVos spoke at Bethune-Cookman University’s commencement ceremony as planned, and well… she was booed. Loudly, unapologetically, and predictably so. As Buzzfeed reports, “an incessant chorus of booing and shouting from students and parents at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach caused DeVos to briefly stumble over her words and speed through portions of her speech, which was at times almost inaudible.” In one video, BCU President Edison Jackson, who the NAACP wants to resign ASAP, can be seen stepping up to the podium in the middle of DeVos’ “speech” and threatening to mail the students’ degrees to them. But that didn’t stop the BCU grads from letting themselves be heard. They stood with their backs turned to DeVos, and triumphantly raised their fists in the air. We teared up a little.
