On the eve of the anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration, director Greg Barker gives us something significant to look back on: the eighth and final year of former President Barack Obama’s time in office.

The Final Year is a documentary from HBO Documentary Pictures and distributed by Magnolia Pictures. It will hit theaters, on demand, and streaming services on January 19, 2018.

The Final Year is a unique insiders’ account of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy team during their last year in office,” reads the project’s official description. “Featuring unprecedented access inside the White House and State Department, The Final Year offers an uncompromising view of the inner workings of the Obama administration as they prepare to leave power after eight years.”

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and takes a hard, candid look at everything Obama and his team, including former Secretary of State John F. Kerry, U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power, and senior advisor Ben Rhodes.

It provides a great deal of insight when it comes to foreign policy, and a thorough critique of Obama’s decision not to intervene in Syria.

“The material is classified, but the emotions aren’t,” Barker said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
