Teen Vogue‘s latest star is Solange Knowles, who—for the magazine’s Volume II: Music Issue cover story—penned an inspiring letter to her younger self. The letter breathes with a sentiment similar to that of her acclaimed opus, A Seat at the Table, which, for a multitude of young Black women, in its radical sophistication, was a timely vessel of solace, healing and reassurance.

“there will be fear. a lot of it,” Solo writes in the opening of her essay. “there will be triumph. a lot of it. there will be constellations you want to reach for but can’t put your finger on. you will trace them like the scars on your body you got from trouble and the times of your life.”

She goes on to detail the growing pains encountered during her adolescent years before closing with a reminder that “there will be you. a whole, whole lot of it. and you will feel good about who she is and who she is still becoming.”

On Wednesday, Solange took to Twitter to express gratitude for the opportunity to flex her creativity in such a space that doesn’t (typically) allow.

“This week I am genuinely thankful for @TeenVogue and @RBMA for amplifying my authentic voice and vision,” she said. “To my young fellow artist, especially women artist of color. Inclusion is cool…but will u realllly let us come into these spaces & CREATE. We aren’t thanking anyone for ‘allowing us’ into these spaces…until we are truly given the access to tear the got damn walls down.”

“I’m so appreciative to everyone this past year who was encouraged and allowed me to do that & thankful to all that have left the blueprint,” she continued.

While Solange’s words are powerful, they also beg some meditation: are we tearing down the walls of spaces we’ve been invited to, or reclaiming what we’ve already built?
