The LGBTQ+ Community Says Goodbye to Activist David S. Buckel.
David S. Buckel, a nationally-known lawyer in the fight for gay rights, was found dead in Prospect Park after he set himself on fire on Saturday morning. In a note left in a shopping cart nearby his remains, he expressed that “many who drive their own lives to help others often realize that they do not change what causes the need for their help.” He added that “honorable purpose in life invites honorable purpose in death,” and explained that he chose to end his life by setting himself on fire with fossil fuels due to his advocacy for environmental causes.
“Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather,” he wrote in an email sent to The New York Times. “Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result — my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.”
