Like many of us, writer Justin Charity wants to know how Kanye—once a lauded hip hop visionary—fell out of reverence so seemingly fast. In a Ringer piece written shortly after West’s latest SNL appearance, Charity examines how the man we once all loved “has self-consciously made it impossible for much of his earlier fan base to root for him these days.”
Banksy’s ‘Girl With Balloon’ Was Shredded During an Auction, and Now It’s Worth Even More Than Before.
Imagine being such a profound artist that the worth of your work increases when it’s destroyed. That’s what happened when one of Banksy’s famous “Girl With Balloon” paintings was auctioned off in London on Friday. The New York Times reports that just moments after being sold for $1.4 million, the painting shredded itself—and yes, Banksy reportedly planned it.
“The ever-elusive, ever-inventive Banksy has once again made a fool of the art world, and captivated millions,” NYT writes. “But has the joke itself slightly self-destructed? Banksy’s remotely shredded ‘Girl With Balloon’ was meant to poke fun at the excesses of the auction market. Yet thanks to the huge amount of publicity generated by this ingenious prank, his prices look set to soar even higher.”
Sotheby’s, the auction house at which the piece was sold, said it was not in on the joke.
“We had no prior knowledge of this event and were not in any way involved,” they stated. Read more here.
