Lena Waithe Wants to “Bring People Together.”

And her new short film, Rising, aims to do just that. Created for the Love Has No Labels campaign—which is working to create more inclusive communities—the film features a diverse group of people coming together to save a boy’s family from drowning during a storm, highlighting how it unfortunately often takes tragedy to bring folks together.

“So excited to be involved,” Waithe told PEOPLE of working on the project. “We need stories like this that bring people together, especially now.”

Game of Thrones director David Nutter, who is also behind the film, added, “We live in a time of tribalism. Rising is a story about shifting the way we communicate. Through this film we want people to go from being defensive of those who are different to accepting and embracing our differences.”

“We just felt like this rose to the level of acting the way that we did,” he stated at a news conference ahead of Tuesday night’s Oakland game. “That’s a decision that we have to make. I’m certainly involved in it, so is Steve [Kerr]. … This was something that required the action that we decided upon.”

ESPN reports that Green’s suspension will cost him a hefty $120,480.
