Singleton’s family released a statement, which read, “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.”

John Singleton is still in a medically-induced coma and alive despite reports on his death Monday morning, per TMZ.

While still alive at the time, John’s publicist states that he is non-responsive and signs are not looking good. Singleton, 51, suffered a major stroke nearly two weeks ago at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after checking in for leg pain. Despite all efforts from his treatment, the situation remains grim for the Boyz N The Hood director.

The first Black filmmaker nominated for the best director Oscar, Singleton is known for the aforementioned Boyz N The Hood, Higher Learning, and Poetic Justice. He is also the executive producer and co-creator of the FX series Snowfall, which debuted in 2017 and will go into its third season.

Meanwhile, Singleton’s family is in an embittered battle over his estate, on condition if he passes. John’s mother, Shelia Ward, asked a judge to be temporary conservator over his business affairs. Singleton’s daughter Cleopatra, however, is looking to block the conservatorship in claims that Shelia is looking to freeze out his four children from the estate.

In the midst of the movie director’s fight for his life, many celebrities and his peers sent their prayers and well wishes:
