In a video interview as part of the Report, Reimagine, Revive Puerto Rico Media Collective, journalist and activist Rosa Clemente asks San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz to speak directly to the Puerto Rican people of the diaspora. Letting go of a heavy sigh, Cruz begins her answer by saying that the island finally understands how necessary the diaspora is to its survival.

“We look to them for strength in months and years to come,” Cruz said. “When we seem silent, don’t think that it’s because we’re okay. Perhaps it’s because we are being systematically silenced. When one voice here drops, a thousand voices in the United States need to rise up to demand we’re treated with dignity.”

She calls on mainland Puerto Ricans to call their members of congress to demand justice and federal assistance. Check out the interview below.
