Ray Allen, the two-time champ and one of the sharpest three-pointers the NBA has ever seen, is most definitely in the hot seat. And apparently it all began when his former championship-winning teammates Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, and Glen Davis felt a way after he left the Boston Celtics in 2012. He didn’t leave on the best of terms, and the animosity has been brewing for the past five years.

But what exactly happened? When he left the Celtics he didn’t even give a courtesy call to any of his teammates to consult them about the decision. 

Kevin Garnett, the most outspoken of the Celtic bunch finally decided to address the Jesus Shuttlesworth in the room.

But first, here’s how it all began…

Ray Allen Defects to the Miami Heat

Back in 2012, NBA vet Allen dipped off from the Celtics to go play for the Miami Heat, alongside superstars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the human meme that is Chris Bosh. Not only did he leave one stacked team to go play for another superstar-laden one, he left a more lucrative deal on the table with Boston than with the defending champions.

Also, the fact that the Heat knocked the Celtics out of the playoffs in back-to-back years before Allen left didn’t help. When he left, Rondo refused to call him by his name and referred to him as “that guy” and “No. 20.” According to Sports Illustrated, Garnett claimed he no longer had Allen’s cell number.

Allen Breaks His Silence

The supposed beef found its way into the headlines again months later when Allen spoke about feeling like the Celtics turned their backs on him after he gave the city a championship.

“I was very loyal to the city and I love the city, but when it came time to keep me in a uniform [the Celtics] did everything they could to seem like … to not want me to come back,” Allen told the Miami Herald in 2012. Yet, he turned down Boston’s $12 million offer for Miami’s $9.5 million.

Rondo’s Re-signing Snub

In a 2015 interview with ESPN, Pierce recounts that when Rondo resigned with Boston, his teammates threw him a little get together at a restaurant and Allen didn’t show up.

“It was a weird relationship,” Pierce told ESPN when asked about his relationship with Allen. “We were all good friends on the court, but Ray always did his own thing. That’s just the way Ray was. Even when we were playing together, we’d be having a team dinner and Ray wouldn’t show up. We’d go to his charity events but Ray wouldn’t show up to somebody else’s.”

The Rondo and Allen beef was a bit deeper than his relationships with the rest of the squad as the two reportedly needed to be separated in the locking once, according to Sports Illustrated.

The Entire Team Reunites on “Area 21”

On May 8, Allen’s Celtic teammates Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, and Glen Davis were invited to Kevin Garnett’s “Area 21” segment on TNT to talk about the bad taste the departure left in their mouths in a six-minute segment.

Off rip, Garnett addressed the issue on his segment by saying  “Everybody’s asking us, ‘Where’s Ray?’ People don’t understand that this is real life for us, and the situation with Ray is very sensitive. I think when we all talked about doing this reunion tour, we talked about guys we consider loyal and part of this group. Just being honest, my two cents, man, when Ray decided to go to the Heat, I felt like he moved on. And he went to pursue another ring, and he got another ring. Shout out to him. And that’s it.”

Ray Allen Responds

Petty is as petty does. The morning after the mini reunion Allen opted to respond with a passive aggressive Facebook message. He posted a photo of himself in a Heat uniform attempting to muscle past Rondo.

We’re not sure how this saga will play out, but the ball is in Allen’s court if he wants to patch up the relationship with his championship team.
