The upcoming first motion picture directed by Frank Ocean has named its lead in rising star David Jonsson.

By now, any news regarding the private singing star Frank Ocean is of high interest, including the news that his directorial debut film now has its lead actor in, David Jonsson. The British actor is fresh from a striking co-lead performance as Andy in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Romulus, released last year, as Dom in the 2023 romantic comedy Rye Lane, starring opposite Vivian Oparah and in HBO’s Industry  Rye Lane would be nominated for Outstanding British Film at the BAFTA Film Awards that year, and was presented at the Sundance Film Festival.

Jonsson, 31, was named to The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen Talent list and was also named one of Variety’s 10 Actors To Watch. The Roy Academy of Dramatic Arts graduate’s appearance in the independent film adds to a full upcoming slate – he’s set to star opposite Sydney Sweeney in Academy Award-nominated actor Colman Domingo’s directorial debut Scandalous  Jonsson will also star in the Stephen King film The Long Walk with Cooper Hoffman, produced by Lionsgate Films, and Wasteman with Tom Blyth  The unnamed Frank Ocean film has already begun shooting in Mexico City. Still, representatives for the Channel Orange singer haven’t offered up many more details when contacted by the press.

The mysterious film is a new artistic venture for Frank Ocean since his last album, Blonde, was released nearly a decade ago. Since that time, he opened a high-end jewelry store in New York’s Chinatown named Homer in 2021. He also made a startling appearance at that year’s Met Gala with a doll described by The Cut as a “tiny robotic green baby” named Cody.

On the musical front, he was slated to headline the second weekend of Coachella in 2023 after heavy speculation. He would perform at the opening weekend but had to cut it short, citing curfew and doctors’ orders due to suffering two fractures and a sprain.

“It was chaotic,” Ocean said in a statement at the time. “There’s some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show, but I did enjoy being out there, and I’ll see you soon.”
