Stefon Diggs Signs With The Washington Commanders

It’s been a wild ride for Stefon Diggs.

After years of stellar play that came along with controversy at each stop, the 32-year-old wide receiver has another chance in the league.

The Washington Commanders have reportedly signed Diggs to partner with third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels and their #1 wide receiver, Terry McLaurin.

He’s signing for one year, for up to $12M.

The embattled NFL wide receiver was once known for his on-field prowess as one of the league’s elite wide receivers. While with the Minnesota Vikings, Diggs was the architect of the 2017 Minneapolis Miracle, an unlikely game-winning walk-off catch that lives rent-free in the minds of New Orleans Saints fans to this day.

But in recent years, his stock dropped as he went from the Bills to the Texans to the Patriots. Diggs had a baby with Cardi B, and then, reportedly, they broke up. Then, a former chef accused him of physical abuse. (He was acquitted in that case.) Diggs is also embroiled in a civil case with a man who says he’s a former lover who was sexually assaulted.

While there were salary concerns and likely age concerns as well, as Stefon turns 33 in November, his year with the Patriots was not just one of his best – it was one of the best for a wide receiver in the last ten years.

Diggs caught 85 out of 103 passes for 1,013 yards last year. His 82.5% catch percentage put him in elite company only three WRs have reached. Diggs is just behind former Saints WR Michael Thomas, who had an 84.5% catch percentage in 2018, and just ahead of Detroit Lions player Amon-Ra St. Brown’s 80% catch percentage in 2024, per ESPN.

Diggs made his first appearance in the Super Bowl with the Patriots earlier this year in a losing effort. He had a fairly quiet game with three receptions on three targets for 37 yards.

They released him in March, largely to avoid a cap hit that would have increased from $10.5M to $26.5M.

Apparently, the Commanders think something is left in the tank.

“I’m just super blessed to have this opportunity,” Diggs told NFL reporter Josina Anderson, according to her X post. “It’s been a long time coming. I’ve remained faithful to the process. Alignment is real, and here I am back home. I’m humbled and thankful to be back where it all started.”

Diggs will return to his hometown, where he starred at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland, and at the University of Maryland. He was drafted in the fifth round as the 146th pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.

The Commanders’ picking up Diggs would seem to end speculation that rogue 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will join the squad. Aiyuk is involved in a fractious divorce with San Francisco, but he is still attached to the team.

Aiyuk has trolled the 49ers, recently, saying that he’d be joining the Commanders to play with his friend and former Arizona State University teammate, Daniels, but now that Diggs has been signed, there wouldn’t seem to be room for him there.
