LaMelo's social media fame and unconventional path to the NBA, including overseas play, have made him a must-watch personality.

If LaMelo Ball could pick any three people in history to wear his signature sneakers, who would he choose? Michael Jordan? Kobe Bryant? Maybe his brother Lonzo? Nope. Melo recently answered the question with arguably the most LaMelo response imaginable: Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Like most things LaMelo does, the clip immediately went viral.
But anyone who has followed Ball for the last decade knows that this is nothing new. Long before he became an NBA All-Star, Melo was one of basketball’s first true social media era prospects. He played alongside older brothers Lonzo and LiAngelo at Chino Hills, became a national name while still in high school and once dropped 92 points as a sophomore. With outspoken father LaVar Ball turning the entire family into must-see television, LaMelo was famous well before he was old enough to drive.
His path from there was anything but conventional. Ball bypassed the traditional college route, played professionally overseas in Lithuania and later Australia, became the NBL Rookie of the Year and eventually went No. 3 overall to Charlotte in the 2020 NBA Draft. He won NBA Rookie of the Year and became an All-Star, but his personality has always been nearly as entertaining as his passes. Whether it is his interviews, his fashion or the completely ridiculous collection of customized cars we’ve documented before, Melo has never exactly blended in. Even the recent look inside his wild old Charlotte apartment felt perfectly on brand.
Now there’s a new chapter. Charlotte traded Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves this summer, putting him in a backcourt with Anthony Edwards — who might be the only NBA superstar capable of matching Melo’s combination of talent and completely unpredictable interviews. Minnesota is betting that a change of scenery, a contender and playing next to Edwards can bring another level out of Ball. Edwards has even spoken about wanting his new teammate to become a little more professional. The basketball might mature, but hopefully the personality never does. Because from teenage Melo to Timberwolves Melo, these moments prove you never really know what is going to come out of his mouth next.
“Beat That N***a A**”
Melo was only 15 years old when the Ball family appeared on Monday Night Raw in 2017, and WWE probably learned pretty quickly why putting a live microphone near the youngest Ball brother was risky. While LaVar was mixing it up with The Mix, LaMelo repeatedly yelled, “Beat that n***a a**” on live television. WWE later apologized for the language, but the clip has lived forever on the internet.
LaMelo Attempts To Name Thanksgiving Food
Asking most NBA players their favorite Thanksgiving dish would produce a pretty boring answer. Asking LaMelo turned into him trying to remember every food that has ever appeared on a Thanksgiving table. Chicken. Turkey. Ham. Then a long internal search for whatever else he was “f*cking with.” The delivery makes the entire thing.
“Oh, Today’s F*ck With Melo Day?”
Trying to interview LaMelo Ball after a win can already be unpredictable. Add his teammates into the equation and you’re basically asking for chaos. While Melo was answering questions during a postgame interview, his teammates started messing with him from off-camera, causing him to stop mid-answer and hilariously ask, “Today f*ck with Melo Day huh?” before attempting to get himself back on track.
Nobody In Practice Can Guard Him
Sometimes confidence crosses the line into comedy. During a locker room interview, Ball was asked about what he was seeing in practice and decided words weren’t enough. He told the cameraman to start pointing at teammates individually while explaining that they could not guard him, including one player whose ankles Melo claimed he took every day. Imagine minding your business after practice and suddenly becoming a prop in your teammate’s interview.
“Dogs and Girls”
A reporter asked Ball how he planned on spending his Christmas holiday in 2025. Melo’s itinerary? “Dogs and girls,” followed by chilling, watching Stranger Things and — almost as an afterthought — remembering Charlotte had to travel to Orlando. Priorities.
LaMelo Finds A Loophole In The Candy-Counting Game
The Hornets’ social media team had a simple challenge for the players: guess how many shamrocks were inside a cup. Naturally, LaMelo found a way to completely ruin the game. Instead of guessing, he dumped every single piece out of the cup, looked at the now-empty glass and answered “zero” before laughing uncontrollably at his own joke. Sometimes the funniest person in the room really is the one entertaining himself the most.
Hold The Interview — It’s LaVar’s Birthday
There are basketball questions, and then there are more important matters. Ball once stopped a postgame interview before it could really begin because he needed everybody watching to know it was LaVar Ball’s birthday. After getting that announcement out of the way and crediting the victory to Pops, Melo calmly told the reporter they could finally start.
His Teammates Made Him Start Cursing On Live TV
Ball’s postgame interviews are already unpredictable before teammates get involved. In one particularly chaotic interview, teammates started messing with him while he was talking, causing Melo to immediately break character and start cursing on live television. Forget keeping the broadcast FCC-friendly — Melo was simply trying to survive the locker room ambush.
Punching Hugo The Hornet After A Play-In Win
Even Melo’s celebrations can become memes. After Charlotte’s wild overtime Play-In victory over Miami in April 2026 — a game Ball helped win with a clutch late basket — cameras caught him throwing punches at Hornets mascot Hugo during the postgame celebration. Hugo survived. The internet received another instant LaMelo classic.
“Water”
Sometimes the funniest LaMelo moments come from how little he seems interested in giving the answer anybody expects. During one interview, Melo was asked a question that apparently deserved a much longer explanation. His response? Simply: “Water.” The deadpan delivery and complete seriousness turned another routine media session into a meme.
LaMelo is entering Minnesota with plenty to prove. Staying healthy, adjusting to a new team and figuring out how to maximize a partnership with Edwards will matter far more than anything he says into a microphone. But becoming some completely buttoned-up veteran? We probably shouldn’t hold our breath. And considering the material he has given us for nearly a decade, why would anybody want him to?
