On Sunday night, Eminem took center stage at London’s Wembley Arena to perform his new single, “Walk on Water,” featuring Beyonce, at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards. Blue Ivy’s mom wasn’t part of the performance, but the song’s co-writer, Skylar Grey, was on hand to step in for Queen Bey.

The performance was stellar, but what happened just moments later caused a bit of confusion: Em took home the night’s first honor, “Best Hip Hop Artist.”

Now, we know exactly what you’re thinking, “How, Sway?”

Here are the facts: It’s been four years since Em dropped his last project, The Marshall Mathers LP 2. And the only music Em dropped this year was a freestyle at this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards, and “Walk on Water,” which was released two days ago.

The 16 main categories of the EMAs are all voted on by the fans, which may explain how he won. But what’s unclear is why he was nominated in the first place.

Even Em was confused about winning the award, saying in his acceptance speech: “Yo, first off… I’m not really sure how I got this, because I haven’t had an album out in a few years…”

“I got one coming, though,” he continued, referring to his forthcoming album Revival, slated for release later in 2017.

We could be reaching, but this sounds like a slice of white privilege to us. Good thing, Em is on our side.

Peep a bit of Em’s performance below.
