The nominations for the 60th Grammy Awards were announced yesterday. While acts like Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, SZA, Rapsody, Khalid, and Tyler The Creator all received nominations, there are some projects that weren’t nominated that both critics and fans feel were snubbed. One such project is A Tribe Called Quest’s critically-acclaimed album, We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.
ATCQ frontman Q-Tip was furious at the lack of respect shown by The Recording Academy for both the group and the album—especially when the group closed out last year’s award ceremony with a posthumous tribute to deceased member Phife Dogg. Tip took to Instagram in a series of videos to accuse The Academy of not recognizing the greatness of We Got It From Here….
“Y’all Grammy motherf*ckas, f*ck y’all! Y’all f*ckin busted y’all ass to try and get us out there and perform! You think a n*gga wanted to f*ckin’ go out there and perform after I lost my man?” he says. “We closed y’all show and we don’t get no f*cking nominations? The last Tribe album? My man is gone! We been doing this sh*t for f*cking years! Y’all n*ggas don’t f*ckin’ recognize.”
“Y’all think it’s some sort of caveat because this is the first time that no white man was nominated in no major categories and sh*t?” he continues. “We were the most Black cultured group out. That’s all we stood on. That’s what we represented. This f*ckin’ album we just dropped, this last Tribe album, it stands with everyone else’s sh*t that’s up there. I don’t give a f*ck. I’m sick of y’all Grammy n*ggas, man. You get us to get out there and f*ckin’ perform last year, and y’all don’t get us no nominations?”
