Mo’Nique appeared on The Breakfast Club for a tense interview about her Netflix boycott and allegedly difficult reputation. She laid into Charlamagne for labeling her the “Donkey of the Day,” attacked Black media for not supporting her, and snapped on Angela Yee for bringing up her difficult reputation. However, if you were listening, you missed the uncomfortable moment that went down when they went off the air.

Mo’Nique was saying goodbye to everyone but didn’t acknowledge Charlamagne (who she referred to by his real name, Lenard). When Charlamagne asked why she wasn’t speaking to him, Mo had an intense reply.

“You are going to hear yourself a lot from me lately,” she said. “You are going to hear yourself around the world because we have to explain brothers like you. We do. And when we watch the movie Birth of a Nation and we saw that man walk his wife into that master’s house, we watched him walk his wife in.”

She ended with, “You’re that brother,” pointing at Charlamagne.

Mo’Nique is referring to a scene from 2016’s The Birth of a Nation where a slave, played by Gabrielle Union, was raped by the master.

During the uncomfortable interview, Mo went off saying, “And then you give me a title of Donkey of the Day … Is your mother still alive? And you’re from what city in South Carolina? Moncks Corner, South Carolina. And if I was to call your mother or your grandmother would they tell me stories of inequality that they had to deal with? … So would your mother be a donkey? Would your grandmother be a donkey?”

See the moment below:

Charlamagne said he gave her “Donkey of the Day” because “I think you’re using racial and gender bias, which are actual real issues, the struggle that the Black woman is going through in many industries is a real issue, but you’re using it to focus on something that you’re dealing with individually.”

Mo’Nique insisted that Charlamagne name one “Black female comedian that’s got the million dollar payday.” Charlamagne couldn’t answer. Mo’Nique also claimed she hasn’t gotten support from Black media, like The Breakfast Club. She then came for Angela Yee for asking about rumors that she is difficult to work with, telling her if she wasn’t going to name names, “Keep it on the playground.”
