Global Running Day (GRD) isn’t just about killing a marathon or pushing your body to its physical limits. The purpose is to simply inspire folks to get up and move. We’ve heard it countless times because it’s true— studies prove that African Americans and Latinos have higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Regular exercise— particularly running, jogging and power walking— increases overall health and are recommended by experts to help prevent illness. GRD is a reminder of the importance of committing to an exercise regimen. Kick off your health journey by trying one of the workouts below today.

1 Actually Run

You don’t have to go far. Experts suggest you run 20-30 minutes per day three times a week or more. It may seem daunting if you’re not used to running, but that’s really only five songs. Pick up your headsets, select your favorite tunes, audiobook or seminar, and zone out. You’ll be done before you know it.

2 Walk It Out

If running isn’t your thing or is a challenge due to physical issues, walk.  Go to your favorite area or even a mall and get your 20 minutes in. If you live in a city and take public transportation, get off a stop or two before your own and walk home. Bring music or just people watch. It’s a great way to de-stress at the end of day.

3 Play Tag With the Kids

Going home to little ones tonight? Children offer an easy excuse to run around and have fun. Treat them to a trip to the park or playtime outside—and get involved. Chase them. Let them chase you. Create your own games. The only rules is that you keep the pace moving for at least 30 minutes.

4 Hit the Park For a Stroll

Don’t let not being ready to break a sweat at the gym stop you from exercising. Make a quick stop on your way home at a local park and take a 20-minute walk.

5 Errands Without Car

Every step you take counts. Got errands tonight? A lot of folks do. Use your time wisely by implementing a little strategy. Park someplace central and walk a few blocks to handle your business. Another option is leaving the car home altogether and walking wherever you can. Think about all of your choices.

6 Treadmill Time

If being outside isn’t the move, head to the gym. The treadmill is a great way to go the distance without going too far. Flip on the television and watch your favorite show or movie, and zone out.
