Next week the Beastie Boys will embark on their Beastie Boys Book tour, but before they kick things off, they’re teaming up with Sonos for a brand new limited edition speaker. Called the Sonos Play:5 Beastie Boys Edition, the musical powerhouse was modeled after the group’s identity to recognize their cultural influence.

“Beastie Boys always adapted their style to each moment, and the albums get better with time,” San Francisco-based artist Barry McGee, who was involved in the speaker design, stated. “I wanted to use graphics in the same spirit – something abrasive that rewards a closer look. The speaker has a pretty contemporary and clean design, so I used a pattern that disrupts the front of the speaker but still complements it.”

“When I grew up in New York, we’d discover new music anywhere from a DJ in a club, to a boombox in the street or subway, or a taxi driver’s radio—all of which involved leaving the house,” Mike D added. “These days, with help from Sonos, you can access all the music you want at any time and in the highest fidelity, in your bathrobe and slippers, or your finest silk smoking jacket.”

And now for a fun historical tidbit: the first song to ever play on a Sonos speaker was “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,” making the collaboration even more fitting.

Priced at $499 USD, the Sonos Play:5 Beastie Boys Edition will make its debut on October 29 in New York City at the top of the groups book tour. It then won’t be available until Dec. 2019 via sonos.com and at the Sonos flagship store in NYC, so you best try to get a peek while you can.
