In what may be the most unsurprising news amid festival season, the second coming of Fyre Fest has been postponed.
Last September, founder Billy McFarland announced that Fyre Festival 2 would occur in the Caribbean. However, as dates got pushed back and luxurious destinations got changed, it’s now officially on hold.
Under McFarland’s leadership, the festival was scheduled to take place on Isla Mujeres, Mexico, from May 30 to June 2, with tickets going on sale in February.
“FYRE Festival 2 is an electrifying celebration of music, arts, cuisine, comedy, fashion, gaming, sports, and treasure hunting—all set in the stunning location of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico,” the site described the event. “Experience unforgettable performances, immersive experiences, and an atmosphere that redefines creativity and culture.”
Tickets started at the ‘Ignite ‘ level, which was a $1,400 general access pass, before things graduated to the Phoenix level, which allows you to be “part of the creation” for a staggering $25,000 pass. But for the even bigger spenders, there’s the secretive Prometheus pass, which costs $1.1 million and confusingly explains it’s for those “who seek to rise above. Who don’t just want to witness history but aspire to shape it.”
But now, at least, it’s not happening, with ticket holders receiving the (very expected) message on Wednesday, according to ABC.
The email read, “The event has been postponed, and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”
Leading up to the festival, even Mexican officials coordinated with the Quintana Roo Tourism Department, and the Playa Del Carmen government said there wasn’t an event of that name planned during the given dates.
“For us, this is an event that does not exist,” Edgar Gasca, Isla Mujeres’ director of Tourism, told The Guardian.
McFarland’s scamming ways first went viral in 2017, when the festival’s first iteration was supposed to be peak luxury but ended with guests being stranded in disaster relief tents while they were served soggy cheese sandwiches. McFarland was eventually sentenced to six years in prison for fraud.
We’re happy to announce that Ja Rule smartly decided to not be involved in the festival this time around.
