Michael Jordan Opens Up 4th Free Healthcare Clinic in North Carolina

After more than 20 years of being removed from the NBA, Michael Jordan‘s greatness persists.
The influence he garnered during his six-time championship-winning career and one of the most successful sneaker lines in the Air Jordan, he’s continuing to use his billionaire status for good with the opening of another Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic.
This marks the fourth facility he’s opened that’s geared toward offering medical access to the uninsured or members of an underserved community.
All four are in his home state of North Carolina, with the newest being a sprawling 7,000 square feet and includes 12 patient rooms that are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The healthcare venture, a partnership with Novant Health, first began in 2019 and has grown in just six years, including a $10 million donation from the Chicago Bulls legend in 2024.
Jordan calls the project personal as it’s in his hometown, fighting to overcome the barriers to quality healthcare, like transportation, or incurring hefty bills.
The partnership yielded the first Wilmington location last year, with the first two locations in Charlotte each receiving a $7 million donation from Jordan. In a few months, Jordan recognized its success and is attempting to do so again with another location in Wilmington.
“It’s truly gratifying to know that in less than a year, our first Novant clinic in Wilmington has already made a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of individuals and families in my hometown,” Jordan said in a Novant Health press statement. “Visiting Wilmington last year for the opening of our first clinic was incredibly moving, and it reinforced just how important access to quality health care is for the community.”
Technically, Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York, but when he was around 5 years old, the family moved to Wilmington, where he famously attended Laney High School. There, he was named a McDonald’s All-American and stuck around the area to attend UNC-Chapel Hill.
Ernie Bovio, president of Novant Health Coastal Region, is proud of the clinics’ strides in the community and knows that with more locations, more people will be served.
“We are profoundly grateful to Michael Jordan for his generosity and vision in making these two clinics a reality in our community,” Bovio said. “Thanks to his philanthropic partnership, our Greenfield Street clinic that opened last year served nearly 1,800 patients in its first nine months. Already, our dedicated teams are building strong relationships and advancing vital medical care in our community.”
