Eliza Wasni, 16, has been charged with murdering her Uber driver with a machete she stole from Walmart the same night. Grant Nelson picked Wasni up from a Walmart in Skokie, Ill. shortly after 3 a.m. and minutes into the ride, she began to stab him to death in the Lincolnwood area.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Cunningham, Nelson managed to pull over his car and run to a nearby condo building lobby, where he pushed buzzers yelling, “Help me, help me, I’m going to die!”

Wasni drove off in Nelson’s car but quickly ran off on foot. Police found her nearby wearing a bra and leggings, crouching behind an air conditioner, with a machete in one hand and a knife in the other. An officer was forced to use a Taser on her and she was taken into custody.

The teen is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder. Judge Michael Hood ordered her to be held without bail and called the crime “extremely violent.” An official with the Cook County sheriff’s office said Wasni will be held in a juvenile facility.
