J. Cole — KOD

Almost two years since releasing 4 Your Eyez Only, J. Cole makes his triumphant return with one of the year’s most anticipated albums, KOD. The new LP’s title has multiple meanings, including “Kids on Drugs,” “Kill Our Demons,” and “King Overdosed.”

Right before dropping the LP, Cole released a trailer for the album explaining its significance. While “Kids on Drugs” focuses on addictions, “King Overdose” deals with Cole’s personal afflictions. Meanwhile, “Kill Our Demons” is all about an “end goal” to confront personal issues in the face.

The running joke that J. Cole goes platinum without features persists. KOD features kiLL edward on two songs, but it seems that’s just Cole World’s alter ego. Listen to Cole rap about kids on drugs, a king’s overdose, and killing our demons below.

J. Period – Wakanda Forever Ever

What happens when OutKast meets Wakanda? J. Period seeks to showcase the brilliance of Andre 3000, Big Boi, and Ryan Coogler’s massively successful Marvel film with Wakanda Forever Ever.

The renowned DJ who masterminded The Hamilton Mixtape with The Roots and Lin-Manuel Miranda, is built on Black Panther’s score and soundtrack with rhymes from OutKast. The result is a mashup that flies from Stankonia to Wakanda with ease.

In a statement on his website, J. Period said he hopes this mash-up effort will “explore the roots of hip-hop in the African drum, themes of empowerment and identity, and the musical intersections between the Afro-futuristic world of Black Panther and intergalactic funk of Outkast.” Read more about Wakanda Forever Ever in our Panther X Phenomenon April cover package here.

Wiz Khalifa — “420 Freestyle”

What would 4/20 be without Wiz Khalifa? The Taylor Gang spitter rolls up a new joint for fans on this smoker’s holiday with “420 Freestyle.”

Over a smooth and funky beat, Mister Cap raps about his favorite pastime. “I was posted on the block with a big ass joint,” he raps. “Police everywhere so we stay on point.”

“420 Freestyle” should hold fans over while they wait on Rolling Papers 2, which is reportedly on the way. Listen to Khalifa celebrate “4/20 every day” in the freestyle below.

Damian Marley feat. Ty Dolla $ign, Stephen Marley & Wiz Khalifa – “Medication (Remix)”

Wiz Khalifa celebrates 4/20 with more than just one song. Today, he also joins Stephen Marley and Ty Dolla $ign on Damian Marley’s “Medication (Remix).”

Over the track’s reggae-infused production, Mister Cap unwinds with another joint. “I’ve been going crazy ’cause you’ve been on my mind,” he raps, using personification to flex. “Some think it’s wrong, but to me, it’s not a crime.” Dolla also sings about smoke. “Keep on rolling up,” he sings. “Medication keeps me going up / Meditation, come on breathe with us.”

Damian’s original Stephen-assisted “Medication” appeared on last year’s Stony Hill. “When I’m with you, I feel so high, I rise above the rain,” Marley sings. “And you don’t do people damage like that bitch cocaine.”

Royce Da 5’9″ feat. Boogie – “Dumb”

Royce Da 5’9” keeps turning pages. After dropping “Boblo Boat” with J. Cole, the Detroit veteran teams up with Shady Records’ newest signee Boogie for “Dumb,” the latest single off his upcoming solo album, Book of Ryan.

While Boogie blasts the dumb, “fake woke” cats over the piano-laden instrumental, Royce takes aim at the industry as a whole.

“Welcome to the Grammys, where your likeness gets used for promo, hypeness, and views,” he raps. “Okay, I hope that you knowing / That if you voted, you might as well not voted for no one / They knew when they made that category, where that trophy was goin’ / All this industry shit is dumb.”

Book of Ryan arrives May 4.
