Reverend Carlton Lee, the president of the National Action Network’s Ferguson chapter, died Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack, sources close to the family confirmed to The Root.

Lee was the pastor of Flood Christian Church in Ferguson and baptized Michael Brown, Sr. in 2014, just days before the grand jury decided not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the killing of Brown’s son, Michael Brown, Jr.

Flood Christian was set on fire during the protests that followed the announcement, despite being outside of the area where the unrest took place. Lee and others suspected that the building was targeted by white supremacists. The reverend would empty his savings account to transform an old auto shop into new home for the church.

Lee was just 34 years old. Reverend Al Sharpton broke the news and shared his condolences on Twitter.
