L ooks like reggaeton hit maker J Balvin can thank the little heiress to the Carter throne for his chart-topping “Mi Gente” remix.
The Colombian singer explained to Vogue that Blue Ivy became obsessed with the original version of “Mi Gente.” The five-year-old tot wouldn’t stop singing it to the point where Beyoncé felt like she had to give credit where it was due.
“That’s how it started,” J Balvin said. “She listened to it so much, at one point, Beyoncé was like, ‘Okay, what’s up? ¿Que pasa aqui?‘”
Eventually one of Beyoncé’ “right -hand people” showed up in Balvin’s recording studio to tell him how much B loved his song. In his typical jokester fashion he proposed she do a remix “as a total offhand remark,” swearing he “never expected it to happen.” However, good things come to those who ask for them — the new version featuring Bey released on September 28.
Today, “Mi Gente” sits number three on the Billboard charts, finally dethroning “Despacito.” Between those two hits and #BardiGang reigning at number one, it’s safe to say Latinx musicians are having the moment they truly deserve.
