A new documentary on the life of Olympic champion hurdler Edwin Moses will premiere at his alma mater, Morehouse College.

Edwin Moses is regarded as one of the greatest athletes the world has seen, and a new documentary capturing his life’s journey will make its official debut at the 6th annual Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival. The Atlanta, Georgia-based Historically Black College & University is Moses’ alma mater. The documentary, entitled MOSES-13 Steps, is a reference to the number of steps that Moses took between hurdles on the track in a career that features his being undefeated in the 400-meter hurdles with 122 wins in that distance from 1977 to 1987 – almost an entire decade.

“His path to becoming unbeaten began after discovering that he could use physics and math calculations to determine the exact number of steps needed to soar over hurdles with ease — ‘13 steps,’” the press release of the film states (Moses earned his master’s degree in physics). “The film demonstrates how Moses’ triumphs on the track not only drove significant changes in sport science, but it also catapulted athlete compensation and equal pay rights as well as the fight against doping. It underscores Moses’ enduring legacy and impact on history.”

MOSES-13 Steps features fellow Morehouse graduates Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson, along with Olympic champions Tommie Smith, Michael Johnson, Daley Thompson, and Donna de Varona in addition to revered track coach Bob Kersee. Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Lonnie Bunch also appear in the film. The film will premiere on September 21 at the close of the festival, where Moses will also be honored with the inaugural Dr. Edwin C. Moses Humanitarian Award  “recognizing his monumental contributions both on and off the track, which have inspired generations to overcome barriers and drive significant social and scientific change.”

“Edwin has been a wonderful pillar of advocacy for the Morehouse community,” said Kara Walker, the Executive Director of the Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival in an interview. “His global impact deserves a grand stage, and we are deeply honored that he chose to come back home to our campus and festival for the premiere of his life’s story and work.”

MOSES – 13 Steps is directed by Michael Wech and executive produced by a group that includes Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman.
