The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already felt different, and that was expected from the jump. For the first time ever, the tournament expanded to 48 teams, spread across the United States, Mexico and Canada, with 12 groups of four and a brand-new Round of 32 added to the knockout stage. That means more nations, more matches, more chaos and a much wider path for teams that may not have survived the old format. The tournament runs from June 11 through July 19, with 104 total matches across 16 host cities.

Now that the games are actually being played, the expanded format has given fans exactly what FIFA probably hoped for: drama in almost every group, big-name stars carrying their countries, co-hosts feeding off home crowds and some traditional powers reminding everybody why they came into the tournament under pressure. Group play runs through June 27, and the new Round of 32 begins June 28 and runs through July 3, so the tournament is right at that point where every result starts shaping the knockout bracket.

With group play almost over and the knockout rounds right around the corner, a few teams have separated themselves from the pack. Some have done it through superstar brilliance. Some have done it through defensive dominance. Some have done it by handling the pressure of playing at home. But through the first stage of the tournament (so far), these five teams have stood out the most.

MEXICO

Mexico has been one of the stories of the tournament, and not just because they are one of the co-hosts. El Tri closed out Group A with a perfect 3-0-0 record, beating Czechia 3-0 in their final group-stage match and finishing with three clean sheets. That matters because Mexico has not just been winning — they have looked composed, organized and completely bought in under Javier Aguirre. The win over Czechia was their biggest World Cup victory since 1970, and they became the first team since Uruguay in 2018 to go through a World Cup group stage without conceding a goal. Add in the Azteca atmosphere, the emotional Guillermo Ochoa moment, and the breakout energy of 17-year-old Gilberto Mora, and Mexico feels like more than just a nice host-nation story. They look like a team with real juice heading into the knockouts.

ARGENTINA

Argentina came into this tournament as the defending champion, and so far, Lionel Messi has made it feel like the crown is still sitting right where it belongs. Argentina opened with a 3-0 win over Algeria behind a Messi hat trick, then followed it with a 2-0 win over Austria, where Messi scored twice more and pushed his tournament total to five goals. That alone is enough to make Argentina one of the biggest standout teams, but the bigger picture is that they have been clean, controlled and ruthless when they get chances. They have not conceded through their first two matches, they already punched their ticket to the Round of 32, and Messi — at 39 — is still playing as the entire tournament bends around him.

FRANCE

France has looked exactly like a team that expected to be here deep into July. Kylian Mbappé has been on demon time, scoring braces in back-to-back wins and keeping himself right in the Golden Boot conversation. The 3-0 win over Iraq was probably their cleanest performance so far, with Mbappé setting the tone, Ousmane Dembélé getting on the scoresheet and Michael Olise continuing to look like one of the most important creators in the tournament. France has already reached the Round of 32, and their group finale against Norway is one of the biggest star matchups of the group stage, pitting Mbappé against Erling Haaland with first place on the line. That is exactly the type of heavyweight energy France brings into this tournament.

BRAZIL

Brazil’s group stage ended with the kind of performance that makes people start using the word “dangerous” again. They beat Scotland 3-0 to win Group C, finishing unbeaten with seven points and a perfect defensive record. Vinícius Júnior was the star, scoring twice and moving to four goals for the tournament, while Matheus Cunha added another and Bruno Guimarães controlled the game with two assists. And then, just to make things even more interesting, Neymar made his long-awaited return to the national team. Brazil had to share points with Morocco earlier in the group, so it has not been flawless, but the Scotland game looked like a warning shot: the defense is locked in, Vini is cooking, and there is still another gear if Neymar can give them anything meaningful.

GERMANY

Germany had one of the loudest opening statements of the entire tournament when they destroyed Curaçao 7-1. Even with the opponent being a World Cup debutant, seven goals is seven goals, and that kind of firepower immediately put the rest of the tournament on notice. Since then, Germany has also shown it can withstand a tougher test, beating Ivory Coast 2-1 and locking up the top spot in Group E. The wild card has been Deniz Undav, who has become one of the tournament’s most unexpected stars, with three goals and two assists off the bench in limited minutes. Germany still has defensive questions, but with their attacking depth, the group-winning start, and the sense that they have finally shaken off the disappointment of recent World Cups, they have earned a spot in the top five.

Honorable Mentions

USA

The U.S. deserves real love here because they handled business early, beat Australia 2-0 and clinched Group D with a game to spare. Christian Pulisic’s fitness is still something to watch, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side has given the home crowd plenty to believe in. They just miss the top five because Mexico’s perfect record and Brazil/Germany’s overall dominance push them slightly ahead.

NORWAY

Norway has been one of the most fun teams of the tournament because Erling Haaland is doing exactly what everyone came to see him do. His two goals against Senegal pushed Norway into the knockouts and gave him four goals in the tournament, making them a real threat to anybody. The reason they land here instead of the top five is simple: we need to see how they look against France with first place on the line.

SPAIN

Spain looked scary in the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, and when they are moving the ball with confidence, they still feel like one of the most technically gifted teams in the field. The slight knock is that the draw with Cape Verde kept them from feeling as dominant as some of the others on this list. Still, Spain is absolutely one of the teams nobody wants to see once the knockout bracket gets real.

COLOMBIA

Colombia opened with a strong 3-1 win over Uzbekistan, with Daniel Muñoz, Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz all scoring. They have already reached the Round of 32, and the talent is obvious, especially with Luis Diaz, a true game-breaker in attack. They are an honorable mention for now because their biggest group-stage measuring stick is still Portugal, which will tell us a lot more about how serious this run can get.
